Learning to Love and Get Along with Ourselves and Others

Writing Love Letters

Writing loves letters to your spouse is one of the best ways to connect and stay connected on an intimate level.  When counseling a new client I usually ask when was the last time they wrote a love note to their spouse, or even uttered the words “I love you” to that person.  More times than not they either tell me never or that its been a long time.  Like most good things love doesn’t come easily and when it does come, it needs frequent nurturing and reinforcement.  I tell my clients to write their spouses love letters expressing their admiration and appreciation for the people they’ve chosen to share their lives with.  I instruct that one or more of the following expressions should be included in the love letter:

  • Thank you for all that you do for me.
  • You are beautiful in my eyes.
  • I love you.
  • Thank you.
  • I’m sorry for the hurt I caused you.
  • I appreciate you.
  • I enjoy the time we share.

Just let the words flow naturally.  The following website is a great source of free e-cards (I happen to use it myself to find free e-cards to send my wife): http://umt.edu/home/postcards/.
