Can I change that please? The Shelter of Each Other, looks interesting.
Could you say a little more on why it looks interesting?
I would love to read Chopra’s book the Happiness Prescription
What about Deepak Chopra’s Happiness Prescription do you find intriguing?
Hi Ben,
sorry, I didn’t really read the “why it appeals to you” bit!
Well, as you know I’m in the second year of a social work degree course. My first year was a foundation year in social sciences and included modules in sociology and social policy. Both of these subjects (which in any case are inter-related) look at the role of families and communities in various ways. Some of the social policy literature that I looked at covered the role of families within societies, as a provider of welfare. There are a wide variety of views on this. The sociology that we looked at covered the break down in traditional communities that we have looked at in recent years. There are plenty of view on this also.
I also like the title: “The Shelter of Each Other.” I am a Buddhist and in my faith we are encouraged to develop appropriate gratitude to others for all the kindness that they have shown us, which we do by seeking to develop an appropriate awareness of the many ways in which we are indepted to them. ‘Kindness’ for us, is considered synonmous with indeptedness, and is not dependent upon a personally kind attitude on the part of the other person – an important point. The people who work for the water company are very kind to us because they provide an essential life-sustaining service that we depend upon. The fact that they aren’t thinking about us as an individual doesn’t make them any less kind.
I think that many communities are better at appreciating kindness and interdependence…. I’d be interested in seeing what this author has to say and how she makes her poins.
I think they are all great addition in our knowledge however, I think I need to read the Why our health matters because Ive been busy this past few months and forgetting about my health.
It happens to be that Dr. Mary Pipher is also a practicing Buddhist, and that she integrates many Buddhist principles and precepts into her work and writing. Thanks for sharing!!!
Good point!!! It has been my experience that healthy living frequently equates happy living!!!
I would never have guessed that at all! There you go….
