To Thine Own Self Be True (Part 1)
Do you appreciate people who respect you for who you are?
Some time ago I received a call from an elite private school with a very strict set of standards. They wanted me to work with one of their students whom they described as being “off the wall” and “severely disturbed emotionally.” From the way they made him out, I wasn’t sure if there would be much if anything that I’d be able to do for the young man. To my surprise, when I met this “patient,” he was relatively “normal.” The school wanted to fit this young man into a box so that he should conform to their perception of how their students should be. Of course, not fitting into the their box made him “abnormal” and unfortunately, he was beginning to buy into their belief of his “abnormality.”
The best thing we can do at times is to let people live. We would do ourselves and others a great favor by simply accepting people as they are, and supporting them towards becoming the best they can be with the hopes that they will do likewise for us.
