Learning to Love and Get Along with Ourselves and Others

The Emotional Benefit of Financial Independence

Financial independence is emotionally liberating.  Every so often I have the opportunity of speaking with someone who, although grown up and advanced in years, is still entirely financially dependent on their parents or in-laws for support.  Almost invariably, financially dependent people, while enjoying their relative financial stability, experience feelings of shame and humiliation over their lack of financial dependence.  Lacking a voice and with limited decision making power as pertains to their own life decisions, most of these people would rather suffer greater economic hardship and instability while enjoying enhanced decision making autonomy.  Times are tight and many of us worry about how we will pay the bills and meet the mortgage on our homes.  However we should be grateful for the ability to lead our own lives with integrity and financial independence.
