Learning to Love and Get Along with Ourselves and Others

Healing Drama

Drama can be healing. As a sophomore in college, I took a course entitled Drama and Healing given by the dean of the drama department.  Mindfulness is an integral component of drama.  As much as the mind stores memories for the body, so too does the body store memories for the mind.

As a final assignment for this class, each student needed to create a dramatic healing piece.  The student was to reach into their past for something that needed healing, bring that pain into the present where it could be healed, while giving it direction, meaning, and purpose for the future.

Next time you feel pained about something, anything, create and perform a healing piece of drama around it.  You can perform the piece alone by yourself, with family, friends, neighbors, at your community center or public library, or in the privacy and safety of your therapist’s office.

The main thing is to savor the healing benefits that healing drama has to offer.

Let us know how you experience the healing.
