H for Health Care (A-Z Happiness Guide)
Health Care is self-care and it is an essential part of being a happy and well-integrated grown-up. When our bodies are strong and healthy our minds are strong and healthy. Frequently when I have a client who is suffering from depression there is something else going on behind the scenes that can be rectified by a trip to the physician or dentist. This is most common in my work with addicts. When addicts are in the throes of their addiction, they are too caught up in the chaos and drama of their lives to notice common physical ailments, aches, and pains. When they enter recovery, after several weeks of being clean and sober they suddenly begin to become aware of their many neglected health care issues.
The story is told of a wise and sagacious elder who told his students that he was about to do something spiritual. The students followed their teacher to see what the master would do. To their surprise, the master took a bath. When asked about his behavior, he answered them that in as much as the king has servants clean the statues made in the king’s image, in as much as human beings are made in God’s image, we should make sure to keep ourselves clean, healthy, and physically fit.
While I was spending time in Montana on the Blackfeet Indian Reservation, a strong emphasis was placed on health care and physical fitness, the reason being that if your body is strong you feel good about yourself mentally and spiritually as well.
The main way that attending to your health care needs will add happiness to your life is by allowing your body to function optimally, thereby allowing for a healthy and optimal flow of mind-body-spirit vitality.
Here are some health care basics, which it pays to follows:
Schedule regular well check ups with your general practitioner.
Schedule regular check ups with your gynecologist.
Get your teeth cleaned regularly.
Work out at the gym.
Do any type of exercise that you enjoy and do it on a regular basis.
Drink plenty of water.
Drink alcohol in moderation (assuming you don’t have an alcohol problem).
Stretch.
Breathe deeply.
Take health care seriously.
Don’t be embarrassed or afraid to see a health care professional.
