Learning to Love and Get Along with Ourselves and Others

Forgiveness Works Marriage Magic

Forgiveness works magic in marriages. Last night my wife and I were quite upset with each other.   I needed to get out of the apartment and breath some fresh air.  While I was out I decided that what we needed was some chocolate ice cream.  Meanwhile, my wife wrote me a letter of apology.  Neither of us wanted to be upset or hold a grudge.  I came home with chocolate ice cream and a clearer head.  My wife had meanwhile written an apology letter.  While holding on to a grudge can sooth our self-esteem in the short run, in the long run grudges maintain our feelings of inadequacy.  While apologies can threaten our feelings of importance in the short run, in the long run they refine our character, helping us to be the best we can be.  So let’s put our best foot forward and next time we’re upset and holding a grudge, let’s let go of it and use our words and feelings constructively.   We’ll feel better and we’ll feel good about ourselves.
