Learning to Love and Get Along with Ourselves and Others

Feeling SAD?

Feeling SAD? Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) is a depressive disorder that effects people annually during a specific season.  Anyone can come down with Seasonal Affective Disorder at any time of year, but it seems to be most common

  • in women,
  • in people between 15-55 years of age (getting a fist time case of SAD goes down with age),
  • and in the winter time in places with long nights and short days.

SAD causes people to feel

  • irritable,
  • grumpy,
  • sleepy and drowsy,
  • eat more and gain weight.

Common treatments for SAD include:

  • light therapy (doctor prescribed),
  • anti-depressant medication (doctor prescribed),
  • psychotherapy (in particular, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy),
  • staying active during the daytime, and moderate exercise (including walking, hiking, and bicycling).

If you, a loved one, or friend, suffers from Seasonal Affective Disorder, the most important thing is to know that you’re not alone, there are millions of others feeling the same way you are and that treatment is only a phone call (or brisk walk) away.
