Learning to Love and Get Along with Ourselves and Others

12 Things I learned From Touring with the Grateful Dead

During my teenage years I did some touring with the Grateful Dead.  Here are 12 things I learned from those times:

  1. The process of getting to the show is usually even more fun the the show itself.
  2. Simple food tastes great.
  3. Doing random acts of unexpected kindness (especially for people you don’t even know) does more for the giver than for the receiver.
  4. Not getting into a show (i.e. not getting what you want) is often a golden opportunity to spend time getting to know yourself better.
  5. The health benefits of dancing are many.
  6. The health benefits of joy are many.
  7. The health benefits of adventure are many.
  8. “Sometimes there’s nothing left to do but smile, smile, smile.”
  9. “Sometimes you might just find you see the light in the strangest of places if you look at it right.”
  10. “Don’t let go because you’re afraid to fall.”
  11. “You are the eyes of the world.”
  12. “Sometimes we go through life crippled but free, blind all the time we are learning to see.”
