12 “Do” and “Don’t”s of Going Through a Divorce
Do you feel as if your divorce (or impending divorce) is causing you to drown in a sea of shame, self-pity, and guilt?
If so, these twelve “do” and “don’t”s of going through a divorce will probably help.
Don’t
- Don’t bring your children into it.
- Don’t speak negatively about your (future) ex to or in the presence of your children.
- Don’t dwell on the bad.
- Don’t allow your emotions to be controlled by anyone other than yourself.
- Don’t wallow in self-pity.
- Don’t internalize any hurtful words or actions that may be directed towards or against you.
Do
- Do own your feelings.
- Do things that you enjoy doing.
- Do speak to close friends and relatives.
- Do spend quality time and happy moments with your children.
- Do let your children know that their parents’ divorce has nothing to do with them.
- Do speak to a counselor if you feel you may be in need of one.
